Designed for an intimate group on a truly vast private wilderness estate, this tailored retreat will reconnect you with your own inner magic. Spend the longest days of the year in a spectacular setting, soaking in the extended daylight hours and using the energy of this time to reveal your inner pathways more clearly. There will be twice daily yoga and meditation, guided hikes, an otherworldly remote setting, and great conversations fireside. Nourish yourself each day with artfully prepared meals from a private chef. Settle in to the quiet peace of this extraordinary place and marvel at the beauty around every bend. From pristine rivers and picturesque glens to majestic red deer and colorful hillsides - Alladale will take your breath away (and the yoga will put it back!).

Alladale Wilderness Reserve is a privately owned 23,000 acre estate powered by its very own hydro-electric system. Its ongoing mission is “rewilding” - a process of reintroducing original plant and wildlife species. It has recently added a self-sustaining hydroponic garden, trout farm, bee hives and fruit trees acclimated to the Highlands to provide food year round. A stand-alone yoga structure for our classes overlooking the beautiful gardens and nestled near the main lodge will round out the property buildings. Along with its conservation work it supports scientific research, produces organic cosmetics, conducts education programs, and donates 7% of bookings to the European Nature Trust. Alladale was featured by Travel+Leisure Magazine as one of the top destinations for 2018 and voted Europe's Most Eco-Friendly Boutique Hotel in 2019.

What will the weather be like? What should I wear? What do I need to pack?

June is one of the most beautiful months in the Highlands of Scotland! Expect average temperatures highs to be between 62-65º F and lows around 49º F. The sun will rise around 4:30am and set about 10:15pm while we are on retreat. Alladale is a micro-climate which also means to expect the unexpected! Temperatures can rise and drop quickly, and rain can arrive at a moment's notice. Wear comfortable clothing for moving around in yoga practices, pack layers of clothing for hiking in multiple temperatures, and have comfortable hiking boots or shoes. Alladale has hiking poles, wellington boots, hats, flashlights, extra jackets, rainproof trousers and more in their stock room to borrow if you need extra layers or support for the hikes.

Will my mobile phone and electronics work at Alladale? Is there internet?

Alladale does have basic internet. There is a limit on data on the property so please refrain from streaming anything on your phone and other devices. Retreat is a wonderful time to unplug! You will not get a mobile signal on the property. Call your mobile phone service provider to check on rates and availability in the area of Scotland we are visiting for when you are nearer to towns. It is often cost-effective to purchase an international plan before going abroad so you can use your mobile phone while traveling. Electronics will work in Scotland but you need a plug adapter and sometimes a converter. A Type G plug adapter is needed for the United Kingdom and if your electronic devices are not marked to accept up to 240V, you will also need a converter.

The property is immense. Can I hike on my own or will I get lost? Are there dangerous wild animals?

Included in your retreat are two guided hikes with the Alladale rangers. This will help you get the lay of the land so you can enjoy hiking on your own. There are hikes you can do on your own without any fear of getting lost, and there are many clear landmarks you will learn to navigate hiking Alladale's beautiful hills on your own if you choose. There are wild animals at Alladale including many bird species, Highland cattle, and various small mammals. It is always good advice to leave the animals alone.

Where is yoga being held? Do I need to bring my own yoga supplies?

Yoga and meditation sessions will be held in a cottage approximately 1 mile walk from the main lodge. The walk is beautiful and all levels – about 20 minutes at a slow pace. If you choose not to walk, there are rides available with Alladale staff. Leave extra time to get to and from yoga and meals. The private cottage is a stone’s throw away from the yoga space ☺ Mats, blocks, straps and bolsters are available for all yoga students – no need to bring anything with you.

Can I bring my family with? What if my significant other wants to golf or do touristy things?

Families are welcome to attend! If you need more information on babysitting for your children or kid-special activities, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Children staying in a room separate from parents are charged as adults. If you have any questions, please ask. There are plentiful world-renowned golf courses nearby that Alladale can assist in booking. Additionally there are castle tours, whisky tastings, town visits and more that Alladale can help organize for those who want to see more of the area.

Do I need a passport?

Yes, you need a valid passport to enter and exit the United Kingdom. Check your passport now and make sure it does not need to be renewed. If it does need to be renewed, do it now! Your passport must be valid beyond your booked return date home to the United States.

Can I use US Dollars?

The United Kingdom uses the Pound Sterling (GBP). You can either exchange dollars for pounds or you can take out local currency from an ATM upon arrival. Check with your bank before your trip to confirm fees associated with using international ATMs and transactions. It's always recommended to let your bank know you are traveling abroad to avoid any interruption to your banking services.

Do I have to eat haggis? What are Scottish food and the meals at the retreat like?

You are welcome to eat whatever you like! The meals at Alladale are deliciously prepared from local produce. Expect meals tailored to your dietary needs, delicious and modern. Please be specific about your dietary preferences on your application when you register. There will always be options for every palate! Breakfast may include eggs, fruit, homemade breads, porridge oats and sausage. Lunch may be packed for a hike or sit down with a simple starter and hearty main dish. Dinner is a seated and more formal affair at Alladale - appetizer, salad, main course and of course dessert. There will be a selection of wine and beer at dinner.

Should I leave a tip? How much?

Tips are welcome for service that is enjoyed. We usually leave a group tip to be divided amongst all the employees who have helped during our stay. You are invited to contribute what you feel reflects the service you received.

Which side of the road do I drive on?

Drive on the left side of the road if you rent a car :) Parking is available at Alladale for anyone who rents a car. Also very good driving directions provided if you choose to drive as you will lose your GPS signal en route to the property.

Will I hear bagpipes?

Maybe! If you would like to add any cultural experiences to your retreat like a bagpipe performance, castle visit, local town tour, whisky tasting or something else entirely, please reach out as soon as possible for the best selection and availability.
